Disney with Kids: Taking a Break on the Liberty Square Riverboat

Every time we visit the Walt Disney World Resort, we inevitably discover something we have never experienced on past trips.  One of our fun finds happened by chance during our recent vacation. While wandering around Liberty Square within Magic Kingdom on a particularly hot and busy day in the park, we noticed that the Liberty Square Riverboat was in the process of loading guests and did not seem to have a wait. We had always noticed the Riverboat but never made it a priority. Since we had some time before our next Fastpass+ reservation, we spontaneously decided to jump aboard and see what this attraction had to offer.

Even though it was a pretty busy summer day, the Liberty Square Riverboat was fairly empty and we explored each level, including a neat enclosed area with padded benches, and took advantage of the views. The 17-minute ride includes the following:

  • An early American settlement
  • An idyllic Native American village
  • Harper’s Mill
  • Fort Langhorn
  • Wilson’s Cave Inn
  • Woodland animals

You’ll also enjoy views of Big Thunder Mountain RailroadSplash Mountain and Haunted Mansion.

Maybe most of all, you’ll enjoy some shade, a breeze, the chance to rest your feet, and we really loved seeing Tom Sawyer Island (one of our favorite spots in Magic Kingdom) from a new angle. For families with very young children, you’ll be happy to hear that there is no minimum height requirement for this attraction.  The Riverboat departs every 30 minutes. If you enjoy taking photos as much as I do, you’ll definitely appreciate being able to snap some new shots of Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Unfortunately, food, drink, and strollers are not allowed on the Riverboat.

Have you experienced the Liberty Square Riverboat? I don’t know that it’s a “can’t miss” attraction for us, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much my whole family enjoyed it and look forward to riding again someday!

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
