Have you ever noticed that the exact same vacation can have a very different price depending on when you go?
One of the easiest ways to stretch your travel budget isn’t choosing a different destination.
It’s choosing different travel dates.
Most people naturally think about traveling during the busiest times of the year. But if your schedule is flexible, even by a few weeks, you may be surprised by how much you can save by traveling during the shoulder season (just before or after peak season) or the off season.
And here’s the best part: saving money is only one of the benefits.
Shoulder season still generally brings pleasant weather, along with fewer crowds, shorter lines at popular attractions, and better availability for hotels, flights, and tours. Instead of competing with thousands of other visitors, you’ll often have a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
A few of my favorite examples:
- The Mediterranean is still lovely and warm in October, but with fewer cruise ships and much lighter crowds.
- Alaska in May or early September offers incredible scenery, wildlife viewing, and often lower prices than the height of summer. Bonus tip: longer hours of nighttime mean better chances of seeing the Northern Lights!
- America’s national parks become much more enjoyable in September after the summer vacation rush begins to wind down – and the weather turns cooler
- Europe in April is a beautiful time to visit. Spring flowers are blooming, outdoor cafés are coming back to life, and many of the biggest attractions are far less crowded than they are in June and July.
Of course, every destination has its own “best” time to visit depending on what you want to experience. That’s one of the things I enjoy helping my clients figure out. Sometimes a small shift in your travel dates can make a surprisingly big difference in both your budget and your overall experience.
If you’re dreaming about a bucket list vacation, don’t just ask yourself where you want to go. Ask yourself when you want to go. That one decision could help you get more vacation for your money.
