Beautiful Cities. Very Tired Feet. The Surprising Side of Traveling in Europe

A first trip to Europe is exciting. But many travelers come home saying the same thing afterward.

I wish I had known that before I went.”

The good news is that most first trip mistakes are easy to avoid once you know what to expect. Let’s take a look at a few of the biggest regrets I’ve heard travelers share after their first Europe trip.

Packing Too Much. This is probably the most common one.

Many travelers pack for every possible situation. Then they find themselves dragging a heavy suitcase across cobblestone streets, through crowded train stations, up narrow staircases, and into hotel elevators that barely fit one person.

European travel also offers one thing that many are surprised at: smaller/lighter airline carry-on luggage requirements. Which means that overpacking can lead to unexpected bag fees at the airports.

A lighter suitcase really makes a huge difference. Most travelers end up wearing the same favorite outfits over and over anyway. And honestly, nobody in Europe cares if you repeated your black pants.

Underestimating the Walking. Even active travelers are often surprised by this.

Europe is incredibly walkable, which is part of what makes it special. But walking there feels different than walking at home. Streets can be uneven. Sidewalks may be narrow. Cobblestones look beautiful in photos but can be rough on feet and knees after several long days.

And the walking adds up fast. A normal sightseeing day can easily turn into several miles without realizing it.

Comfortable shoes matter far more than most people expect – this is not the time for cute little dress shoes, nor is it the time for shoes you just bought. They need to be comfy and broken in. Save fashionable shoes for back home.

Flying Overnight and Touring Immediately. Many travelers land in Europe early in the morning and plan a full sightseeing day right away. It seems like a good way to maximize vacation time.

But overnight flights are rarely restful. Even travelers who sleep well on planes usually do not get great sleep. Then jet lag hits hard halfway through the afternoon, making that first day feel miserable instead of exciting.

A slower arrival day often makes the rest of the trip much more enjoyable. A relaxed lunch, an early dinner, or a simple walk through the neighborhood is usually enough for day one!

None of these mistakes ruin a trip. In fact, many travelers laugh about them afterward. But knowing what to expect ahead of time can make a first Europe trip feel much smoother and far less exhausting.

And that leaves more energy for the parts people remember most – making memories.
