Navigating Hurricane Season: Your Cruise Adventure Awaits!

It happens every year.

Folks who have their long-awaited fall tropical vacations coming up, begin to obsessively check the weather forecasts in the days before they leave, with an eye towards any “weather systems” that may be developing in the Atlantic.

In other words – it’s hurricane season.

While being mindful of any hurricanes that could potentially affect your vacation is important, those with Caribbean cruises have less cause for concern than anyone heading to an island resort – for one very big reason.

Cruises can move to where a hurricane isn’t.

If a hurricane is coming, the cruise ship has the ability to change its course to avoid the storm, in order to keep everyone safe. The good news here is that when a cruise has to divert from a planned itinerary due to tropical weather, the ship will typically try to visit another port – and sometimes will go in a completely different direction entirely, which can be a fun adventure in itself!

There is a downside to this though, and it is one to keep in mind, namely that you may end up missing planned ports of call. This can happen not only during a hurricane – but well after a hurricane if there is significant damage to a port. And while many cruise lines and independent excursion providers (but not all) will not charge you for shore excursions if you weren’t able to dock at the port, if you have your heart set on visiting a specific port, sailing at a different time of the year might be a better option.

Now, let’s talk about the one MAJOR thing that anyone sailing in the fall should have (well really, anyone traveling anywhere at any time of the year) – and yes, it’s travel insurance. This is the single best way to protect your vacation investment from unexpected circumstances – like a hurricane. Travel insurance can help cover expenses that may not be covered by your cruise line, and policies also typically offer emergency medical coverage. Travel insurance can also be a help if you end up with unplanned additional expenses due to a delayed or cancelled flight – regardless of where you are traveling. Trust me, it happens far more than most folks realize. I’ve traveled to the Caribbean during hurricane season a number of times, thankfully with no issues, but I wouldn’t leave home without travel insurance. Ever.

One last thing – work with a trusted travel specialist who can assist you if there are any issues (weather or otherwise). As travel experts, we are familiar with cruise/destination hurricane policies and can assist with modifying or rescheduling travel plans if your trip is affected. It’s just one less thing for you to worry about!

The idea of a hurricane heading your way while on vacation can sound scary, but cruise lines are well-prepared to ensure the safety of passengers, guiding your ship away from any stormy paths. So, rest easy knowing that while nature’s forces might be powerful, your cruising experience is in capable hands.

Bon voyage – smooth seas and sunny skies await!
