Exploring Disney: Blasting Off on Space Mountain

Space Mountain, as one of the 4 “mountains” in Magic Kingdom, is a must do for many people. My grand-kids all the way down to age 7 have blast off on this popular attraction and absolutely love it! For me – as I am not much of a coaster fan – not so much, but I have ridden it and survived! Let’s take a look today at what makes this so special.

Space Mountain is in the dark with fast turns and drops and is housed in the 2nd most iconic building in Magic Kingdom, right after Cinderella castle. The only thing you can see as you take a ride through space on this ride, are the reflective “shooting stars” on the other vehicles as they whiz by you in the dark -all the while listening to futuristic music the entire time.

One of the challenges of Space Mountain is that you sit very low in the car, so it can be a little awkward to get into and especially out of for some folks. You are also sitting in a single line in the car, which seats 3 people, so you’ll want to make sure that riders – especially younger ones – know that they won’t be sitting next to a grown up. The main restraint comes up between your legs and against your chest/stomach area, which is a bit different (and a little unnerving for me – I like a bit more holding me in!).

The update in the queue has made the wait for Space Mountain much easier and definitely more fun. In fact the time I rode it, we moved almost too quickly through the queue, and so I missed a lot of the things along the way.

If Space Mountain is on your list of Must-Do-Rides, getting a Fast Pass for this ride is strongly recommended, as the line can get very long very quickly. You must be 44” or taller to ride, and you must be able to transfer from a scooter or wheelchair.

Are you up to the challenge to take a ride through space?

Find out how the FREE services of a Disney World travel agent can make planning your Disney vacation simple and STRESS FREE!

Debbie and her husband live in Chattanooga, TN. They both are huge Disney fans and try to visit the most Magical Place on Earth at least once a year, if possible. They are enjoying taking each of their now 10 grandchildren and hope to also take their great granddaughter in the near future. One of their favorite trips has been visiting Disney with adults only, including one trip when their son proposed to his girlfriend. Each trip begins with the planning, which can take up to a year, beginning with how to get the grandkids excited about their upcoming trip. They have surprised some of them the day before they left, while the latest one had “presents” every 10 days starting at 90 days all leading up to an exciting trip with her parents along also. Their philosophy on Disney Trips? “Each trip is completely different, like visiting Walt Disney World for the first time.” They both enjoy all that Disney has to offer, but enjoy Animal Kingdom and EPCOT the most. It is their goal that everyone who visits Walt Disney World has a magical trip with lots of memories to last a life time.
