Exploring Disney: Astro Orbiter

Have you been into Orbit?  I think many people don’t even realize that Astro Orbiter is right in front of them – or should I say just over them. 🙂  Unless you are looking for it, this ride is somewhat hidden in Tomorrowland. Close to the People Mover, you actually have to take the elevator to the 2nd floor to board your “space-ship”!

So if you haven’t ridden Astro Orbiter and are wondering what it is like, imagine a ride similar to Dumbo but on a higher level, literally. Your “space-ship” holds 2 people and the up and down movement is controlled by the front passenger. (Many years ago I put my then 6 year old in the front, not knowing this. And he liked to go high! Now remember you are at the same height as the second floor of a building, so going up from there to what seems like another floor kind of freaked out this mom! He was having fun, me not so much.) The sides of your ship are high and you are belted in, so it is not much different than Dumbo or TriceraTop Spin in Animal Kingdom.

Surprisingly there is no height limit on this ride and while it is a slow, spinning ride, it is truly fun for all ages. Because Astro Orbiter is one of the original Magic Kingdom rides, I suggest everyone try it at least once. The view from your “space-ship” is incredible. This ride is also a stop-and-load so the line can seem long, even if it isn’t.

Astro Orbiter can be a favorite with youngsters, especially the future astronauts among us. Think of it as the Space Mountain for youngsters!

One of their favorite trips has been visiting Disney with adults only, including one trip when their son proposed to his girlfriend. Each trip begins with the planning, which can take up to a year, beginning with how to get the grandkids excited about their upcoming trip. They have surprised some of them the day before they left, while the latest one had “presents” every 10 days starting at 90 days all leading up to an exciting trip with her parents along also. Their philosophy on Disney Trips? “Each trip is completely different, like visiting Walt Disney World for the first time.” They both enjoy all that Disney has to offer, but enjoy Animal Kingdom and EPCOT the most. It is their goal that everyone who visits Walt Disney World has a magical trip with lots of memories to last a life time.
