Disney Learning at Home

With everything going on in the world these days, it’s an understatement to say that we’ve all had to make some adjustments and likely experienced our fair share of disappointments. From cancelled vacations to postponed celebrations and everything in between, we’re all adapting to this pandemic in one way or another. Personally, I’ve postponed what was supposed to be my first kid-free (since having kids) trip to Walt Disney World Resort to celebrate a milestone birthday. In the meantime, I’ve also transitioned from a full-time professional who worked outside of the home to temporarily being a full-time stay-at-home mom, teacher, lunch lady, and more.

During this strange season of life, we are learning how to become remote learners and teachers. Thank goodness for the internet, which has an endless supply of ideas to entertain, engage, and educate young students. Since we can’t physically be at Walt Disney World right now, we can bring some of the magic to life here at home and I’m sharing some of our favorite finds so far.

We were one of those families that jumped on the Disney+ streaming services bandwagon the day it became available and we have been utilizing this more and more recently. We are loving the DisneyNature and National Geographic documentaries, Shop Class. New content is being added all the time and we definitely feel like Disney+ is a great value.

Next, the Disney Parks How to Draw Series on YouTube is a great resource for adults and children both who enjoy drawing. My kids love art class at school and being artistically challenged, I was at a loss on how to provide them with any direction in terms of an outlet for their creativity. They really enjoy any drawing tutorials, but especially when it comes to Star Wars characters!

Finally, another amazing opporunity that has been provided for free during this time is the Imagineering in a Box program. This online program is a partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and Khan Academy, who says “Imagineering in a Box is designed to pull back the curtain to show you how artists, designers and engineers work together to create theme parks. Go behind the scenes with Disney Imagineers and complete project-based exercises to design a theme park of your very own.”

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
