Disney with Kids: Bringing the Magic Home for Halloween

Can you believe summer is officially over and now Halloween is right around the corner? Before we know it, the holiday season will be in full swing! That also means it’s been over a year now since my family last visited Walt Disney World and we are feeling pretty homesick for our favorite place.

My little boys have always had an affinity for pirates and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean in particular, but our September Disney trip last year really sparked their interest! Their favorite ride is Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom and as soon as we came home, they were all about talking like pirates and watching the movies on repeat while playing with the toys we bought at the attraction’s gift shop.

As soon as we started shopping for Halloween costumes, they knew exactly who they wanted to dress up as to go trick-or-treating. One kid always wants to be a good guy while the other one always sides with the villain, so it worked out perfectly when they settled on Captain Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones. We easily found the Jack Sparrow costume at a local Halloween shop, and lucked into the last Jack Sparrow hat/wig at the Disney Store. It was even on clearance! Davy Jones was a little trickier but we were able to find the jacket and hat in new condition on eBay. We fashioned a lobster claw and lobster leg ourselves (not my area of expertise!) and our villain pirate was thrilled!

Since last October, they’ve continued to play Pirates by dressing up in their Disney costumes many times throughout the year. I love to see their creativity come to life as they enter their imaginary play world.

Bringing little pieces of our Disney World vacations into everyday life is just one thing we do to feel a little less homesick for Disney World. These two pirates were the life of the party on Halloween night. We’ve never gotten as many compliments as we did last year. It’s got me wondering who they will choose to dress up as this year. Does your family choose Disney-themed costumes? How do you bring Disney World magic into your everyday life?

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
