If thoughts of California bring to mind sunny beaches, big cities, theme parks, or wine country – and don’t make you think skiing, hiking, or kayaking as well – then you may not have thought (or even heard) about Mammoth Lakes. With a natural beauty and plenty to do for tourists in every season, this town located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains is the perfect place to escape to for a relaxing and fun vacation.

As you would expect with a name like “mammoth”, everything in Mammoth Lakes is huge: the mountains, the expanse of the valleys, the number of crystal clear mountain lakes, to say nothing of the many ways to experience  adventure and the great outdoors. If you’re looking to ski or snowshoe in the winter, there’s ample opportunity to do that. But if you’d prefer to visit during the summer, fall, or “swinter” as it’s known here , you’ll find world class mountain biking, rock climbing and hiking, to say nothing of fishing, boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

In addition to the many recreation options, one of the great things about Mammoth Lakes is its proximity to some other pretty cool locations within an easy drive. Mammoth Lakes is close enough to travel to Yosemite National Park, is centrally located to Death Valley – only a few hours to the south, and Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, is only 90 minutes away.

Looking for artistic and cultural activities? Yup, Mammoth Lakes has that too. With a variety of festivals throughout the year as well as some relaxing spas, visitors have more to do that “just” the outdoors. And visitors will find plenty of fine dining options as well.

Whether you consider camping, or plan a stay in a luxury resort or chalet, for anyone looking for a scenic and beautiful vacation that is “away from it all” and yet has a great variety of things to do, Mammoth Lakes is a great choice for a truly memorable vacation.
