Mobility in Mouseland: Scooter Rentals Save the Day

Hello Disney Fans! As you all know, there is a LOT of walking when you go to Walt Disney World! Last year we walked over 9 miles on our first day alone!  But when you have mobility issues, that’s another story!

I have a bad knee that I have been dealing with for over 4 years – replacement, revision, months of physical therapy – and before my last surgery that enabled me to walk those 9 miles, I had to rent a scooter, or ECV (Electronic Convenience Vehicle) to make it through the day.  Not only walking but standing in line or standing in one place to watch a parade or fireworks, was excruciating!  Thank goodness for scooters. They are truly a lifesaver when you are at the most MAGICAL place on earth, but you aren’t feeling very magical because you are in pain!

ECV’s can be rented at all 4 parks, both water parks and at Disney Springs, but you will need to budget for them: they are $50 a day plus a $20 refundable deposit in the parks, and $50 a day plus $100 refundable deposit at the water parks and Disney Springs. Scooters can be used only in the park you rent it from, so if you want to park hop just turn that one back in, get your receipt and take it to the next park. At that new park they will give you another scooter if available.  When you are finished and ready to head back to your resort for the night, just turn your scooter back in, collect your deposit and you are on your way!

Now if you want to have a scooter in-between parks (or don’t want to have to return/get a new scooter at each park), you can also choose to rent from an outside company. There are multiple companies in the Orlando area that rent scooters and wheelchairs to Disney guests and they will even deliver to your resort (and pick it up at the end of your trip). There are pros and cons to each way of renting, but if you are pretty sure you want a scooter throughout your stay, even at your resort, you may find renting from outside companies to be a cost savings.

ECVs really do make your trip more enjoyable – plus you aren’t as tired as everyone else in your party! So, next time you are having mobility issues, don’t let that stop you from having the time of your life on your Walt Disney World Vacation!! Rent that scooter!!

As Julie says: “I am addicted to all things Disney! 🙂 I grew up in Vernon, TX and now reside in Waller, TX (outside of Houston) on a small ranch with my hubby and all of our animals who we affectionately call “The Zoo Crew”! We have been married almost a year now (together for 7) and have 5 children and 9 grandchildren between the 2 of us. We knew we were meant for each other when we discovered we were both Disney fanatics! 🙂 I went to Disneyland for the first time when I was 6 and fell in love with the magic of Disney. Now, my husband and I go to Disney World every 2 years either with friends or with whichever kid and grandkid are available to go at the time. We spend a lot of time planning our trips to ensure that everyone has the most memorable time while there, so that is what I will be writing about and hopefully give you some ideas to try for YOUR next Disney vacation. I am very excited to be a part of The Affordable Mouse team!”
