Handling the Heat at Walt Disney World

Planning a summertime visit to Walt Disney World involves, in addition to the typical planning, giving some thought about – and planning for – the heat. We have visited in the summer, and by preparing as much as possible, we ended up having a wonderful, albeit sweaty, time. To ease any potential reader fears about whether or not a summer trip is doable, read on to find out what helped us the most.

First of all, most of the credit goes to Imagineers who planned the parks out so well. There are many opportunities for shade and air conditioning that honestly, you don’t have to be outside for long periods of time unless you so choose. We opted to skip standing in long lines that were not shady/indoors during the heat of the day (such as Tomorrowland Speedway for example) and did them later in the evening.

We went prepared with cooling towels that I ordered online. These things make a world of difference! We wore light, comfortable clothing and when none of that helped, we took advantage of air conditioned shops, restaurants, and/or attractions.

I always recommend a few “down” days to enjoy your resort, Disney Springs, and to relax in or beside the pool. On our most recent summer visit, we had four non-park days during a 10-day trip, which provided a refreshing break from the heat (and sweat). Of course, you can also opt to break up each day and head back to the pool for a swim as well!

Finally, as I mentioned before, Disney World is designed with heat in mind! Every park has some opportunity to cool off with water play areas or mist. I would have no reservations – about making summer reservations again in the future!

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
