It’s not really possible to discuss cruising at the moment without addressing the question that is on the minds of many who are considering a cruise vacation – “What are the COVID policies if you want to cruise right now?”
So, let’s chat about that today.
We all know that the travel industry was hit very hard by the pandemic and cruising probably took the biggest blow. And while the rest of the travel industry began recovering last year, cruises have been one of the last to resume, as industry leaders worked together – alongside health and safety officials from all countries that ships sailed from, or to – to implement policies that would protect both employees and passengers.
As a result of that collaboration, the strict requirements that have been implemented have resulted in a successful resumption of sailing around the world, with reported onboard COVID-19 cases being an extremely small fraction of the number of passengers according to the CDC and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).
While each cruise line has their own set of COVID policies, those wishing to plan a cruise vacation will find a number of similarities in the protocols of most of the cruise lines, with some variation of the following:
Vaccination – Many if not most cruise lines are requiring vaccinations of all eligible passengers, and a few like Norwegian and Virgin Voyages are currently sailing with only fully vaccinated passengers. Others like Royal Caribbean and Carnival have limited exemptions for some cruises but those not vaccinated may have additional protocols or restrictions that vaccinated passengers may not have. Most if not all cruise lines have mandated vaccinations for all employees.
Testing – Those wishing to cruise should also expect some aspect of COVID testing for their trip. It may involve testing a few days prior to their cruise, and/or testing at the port before boarding, and potentially additional testing while onboard if it’s a longer cruise. In addition, testing is also required before arrival in some countries at the end of the cruise, such as the current requirement for entry to the U.S.
It’s important to note here, that for both vaccination and testing requirements, a good bit is based on the requirements of individual countries where cruises will port, especially those Caribbean and Bahamian islands who each have protocols that all visitors – including cruise passengers who wish to visit for the day – must adhere to.
Masks and Other Policies – While mask-wearing requirements will vary by cruise line, passengers can reasonably expect that they may be required to wear a mask in certain parts of the ship, regardless of vaccination status. Those sailing now may also find that onboard passenger capacities are reduced, dining tables are set for smaller groups, and there are social-distancing reminders – along with plenty of hand sanitizer stations (including in staterooms).
As with everything else about travel at the moment, things with cruising can be complicated. Requirements do change (regularly) and each cruise line has it’s own requirements that must be followed in order to board the ship. But no worries! Working closely with your travel professional will ensure that you to have all the information you need in order to safely set sail on your wonderful and relaxing cruise vacation!
