Williamsburg and the surrounding area offers a variety of vacation options for families. Colonial Williamsburg, which is what most people associate with the area, is the heart of the region. Step back in time to this recreated 18th century colonial town and you will be greeted with townspeople, shopkeepers, politicians, slaves and more who called the Revolutionary City home. Don’t be surprised to meet Thomas Jefferson as you wander around, and if you do, be sure to ask his thoughts on writing the Declaration of Independence. Ever wonder how a blacksmith does his job, or curious how a cobbler makes shoes? Here’s your chance, as you can visit with a number of different tradespeople, watch them work, and best of all, ask questions. Kids will be fascinated and so will grownups!
Colonial Williamsburg offers a variety of ways to experience the town. You can certainly just wander around on your own, although you’ll need a ticket for admittance to the trade demonstrations and some of the historical buildings, and there are a variety of ticket options available. Want to add to your experience? Consider one of the many guided and self-guided tours – including ghost walks and carriage rides. Kids will especially love the chance to dress in 18th century clothing and of course, there are several great restaurants serving colonial-inspired meals.

But – the colonial center of Williamsburg is just part of what you can experience in the area. What about a beach day? Just an hour away, you’ll find the beautiful sands of Virginia Beach. Interested in naval operations? Plan some time to visit the naval base in Norfolk.
And if you want to add a truly different aspect to your visit, head west a few hours and add on a visit to the Shenandoah mountains. Charlottesville, the home of the University of Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is about 2 hours from Williamsburg and from there, you can spend some time exploring this lovely area, with it’s scenic drives, and quaint towns.
So now that you want to visit Williamsburg, when should you go? Due to the current situation with the pandemic, things are still a bit uncertain for summer – but at the same time, summer is super hot in this area, and wouldn’t necessarily be the the best time to be touring the colonial area. If you have the chance to visit during the fall, you’ll have the advantage of cooler weather, and gorgeous fall foliage. Bonus if you plan to visit the Shenandoah Valley as well, as there will be many orchards open during prime apple-picking and cider-making time! Spring is a lovely time of year, especially if you’re from “up north” as you’ll find spring comes earlier to this part of the country than what you’re used to. Or, visit during the holidays for a taste of how colonial America celebrated the Christmas season.
