Travel Fail? Your Vacation Called and May Need a Vacation.

There’s something about a bucket-list trip that makes us want to see and do ALL the things.

The problem is that sometimes “making the most of your trip” can quickly turn into trying to fit three weeks of vacation into seven days – and that’s when things can get a little exhausting.

Which leads us to a very common “travel fail”…

The Fail – You’ve waited years for this trip and have saved, planned, and finally made it to that destination you’ve been dreaming about. So naturally, you want to see EVERYTHING. The famous sights. The little villages. The museums. The local market. That restaurant everyone recommends.

Before you know it, your relaxing vacation has become a carefully choreographed race from one experience to the next. And somewhere around day four, you realize you’re exhausted, and you can barely remember what you saw yesterday.

Why It Happens – It’s easy to feel like every minute of a bucket-list vacation needs to count.

After all, you may not know when – or if – you’ll be back. And when you’re spending the time and money to travel halfway around the world, it can be tempting to think, “We might as well do it all!

But trying to fit everything in can actually mean enjoying less of what you came to experience. You don’t want to rush through a beautiful city because you have a 10:00 tour, a noon museum reservation, a 2:00 train and dinner reservations at 6:00.

Your bucket-list dream vacation should not leave you so exhausted that you miss the things that will make your trip the most memorable.

How to Avoid It – Start by deciding what matters most to you. This is truly just about the most important thing to do right at the very beginning (once you decide on where you want to go). What are the experiences you would be disappointed to miss? Make those your priorities and plan first with those in mind. Then give yourself some breathing room around them.

Leave time to wander down that charming street you spotted from the taxi. Sit at a café and enjoy a coffee while watching the world go by. Spend an afternoon at the hotel pool. Or simply take a slower morning because – well, you’re on vacation!

This is one reason I love guided tours and river cruises for bucket-list travel. They do a great job of taking care of the logistics and including experiences that are high on many travelers’ must-see lists – but they don’t overcrowd the itinerary. You get to see and experience a lot – but it’s balanced with plenty of time to explore on your own (or just do nothing at all).

And that leaves room for being in the moment and enjoying exactly where you are.

My Take – I’m all for making the most of your vacation. After all, there are a lot of places I want to see and experiences I want to have! But I’ve also learned that there’s a difference between making the most of your time and trying to cram things into every moment of your trip.

A great vacation should have a little structure, a few “wow, I can’t believe I’m actually here” moments – and plenty of time to simply soak it all in.

Because you didn’t travel all that way just to check things off a list. You traveled to experience the places that you’ve dreamed about for ages.

That’s not wasted vacation time. That IS the vacation.
