Have you ever noticed that almost everyone talks about taking an Alaskan cruise, but not nearly as many people talk about experiencing Alaska?
Don’t get me wrong. Alaskan cruises are incredible. Sailing past towering glaciers, spotting humpback whales, and watching bald eagles soar overhead is unforgettable. But Alaska is so much more than what you can see from the water.
If Alaska is on your bucket list, here are a few reasons it deserves a closer look.
Meet Alaska’s Wild Side
Wildlife is one of the biggest reasons people fall in love with Alaska. Depending on where you travel, you might see bears fishing for salmon, moose wandering through town, mountain goats perched on cliffs, caribou crossing the tundra, sea otters floating in quiet coves, or even wolves in the distance. Every day feels a little different because nature is always putting on a show.
Go Beyond the Coast
Cruise ports like Sitka and Skagway are wonderful introductions to Alaska’s history and culture. Sitka blends Native Alaskan traditions with Russian heritage, while Skagway still feels like you’ve stepped back into the days of the Klondike Gold Rush.
But if you venture inland, you’ll discover a completely different Alaska. Denali National Park offers breathtaking scenery and incredible opportunities to see wildlife in its natural habitat. The charming town of Talkeetna is full of local character, cozy cafés, and spectacular views of Denali on a clear day.
Try Something You Can’t Do Just Anywhere
Some experiences are uniquely Alaskan.
You can meet the famous sled dogs that train for the Iditarod, ride a dog sled across a glacier in the summer, take a flightseeing tour over snow-capped mountains, or even land on a glacier. These are the kinds of memories that people talk about long after they get home.
Cruise or Land Tour?
This is one of the questions I hear most often.
A cruise is perfect for seeing Alaska’s spectacular coastline, glaciers, and many of the charming coastal communities.
A land tour lets you experience Alaska’s vast wilderness, visit Denali, spend more time watching wildlife, and discover places that ships simply can’t reach.
If you ask me, the best answer is…both. Many cruise lines and guided tour companies offer cruise-and-land vacation packages that combine the scenic beauty of the Inside Passage with several days exploring Alaska’s interior. It’s one of the best ways to experience everything that makes Alaska so special.
Alaska has a way of making you feel small in the very best sense. The mountains are bigger, the skies seem wider, and the wildlife reminds you that nature is still very much in charge.
It’s one of those places that photographs simply can’t do justice. You really have to experience it for yourself!
