Thrifty Thursday: On Your Mark, Get Set, Save for Disney Vacation!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Time to kick off the 2015 year with saving for Disney vacation time!  Saving is not magical… it requires imagination and diligence but together we can make Disney more affordable and magical throughout this new year, not more expensive!

Each Mouseketeer needs their own Disney Piggybank!

Last year, I introduced a piggy bank savings plan which I have referred back to periodically throughout this year.  I’m not going to reprint the spreadsheet savings chart but it is in the article if you follow the link above.  Saving with the piggy bank savings plan is a great way for your kids to save towards souvenirs they want to buy while on vacation.   For your kids to save for their own Disney magic, please give them a special tin or piggy bank just for Disney vacation saving.  This designates that money as being special. Perhaps they should decorate their special saving container with Disney character stickers (clicking here will give you free printable stickers).  Your mouseketeers will be amazed how much spending money they can save if they deposit part of their allowance in their Disney piggybank weekly!

Of course, Mouseketeers are like good musketeers, they follow a leader so lead by example.  Set up your own Disney savings container with the goal that you will save enough to pay for at least a ticket or two during this year.  You can setup the savings plan as described above but feeding the piggy a snack or two during the week boosts the $$$ more than you can imagine.  Here’s a few little ways to feed your pig to boost your Disney savings… it’s almost Magical!

  1. When paying cash, only pay with bills larger than $1.  Then at the end of the day, all change and $1 bills go into the pig.
  2. Any found change laying around the house or in the dryer goes directly into your Disney piggybank.
  3. Set up a “nice” jar.  Anyone who is less than nice is fined 25¢ which goes into the Disney piggybank!  This goes against the kids’ spendable allowance, not their Disney savings.  They must be committed to saving a portion of their allowance with no fudging.  Again, leadership by example applies here… if you are not nice, you are fined, even if you have to fine yourself.

The most magical Disney vacations can be affordable with a bit of planning and saving!  Have a Magical 2015!

Make your Disney memories magical, not expensive!
