Thrifty Thursday: Making the Magic Last

As a little girl, I spent many days at my grandmother’s house. Some of my fondest memories are of us, snuggled together on the couch, looking through her old photo albums.  I loved slowly turning the pages as she told me stories about the people in the pictures – all the way from the early 1900s up to when I was just a baby.  I am guilty of failing to print pictures or make photo albums in this digital, fast-paced age.  The ability to savor our family memories is a gift I want to give my children, minus the burden of having to convert data from one format to another or tediously sort through hundreds of thousands of photo files.

Without a doubt, the worst thing about going on a Disney vacation is returning home to work, bills, and all the very un-magical things about every day life. I would go (and have gone) as far to say that it is a temporary depression. {Click HERE if you think you might be suffering from Post-Disney Vacation Depression but aren’t familiar with the diagnostic criteria.}  One of my first priorities when I return to reality is to create a lasting memoir of our trip. Something I can hold in my hands.  Something I can share with my children (and grandchildren one day!), as we cuddle on the couch and tell stories of days gone by.

There are countless websites now that make creating photo memory books very simple.  Promotion codes for deep discounts are readily available with a little research, making this a fun, fast, and affordable way to hold your Disney memories in your hands to share for generations to come. Furthermore, the beauty and reassurance in creating these books lies in knowing that if you would happen to lose everything you own to fire or some other disaster, your memories are preserved on a server and the book(s) could be ordered again with a few clicks of your mouse. Or taps on your smartphone or tablet.  So while the digital age has fostered some laziness on my part, I wouldn’t give it up for anything! Spending time working on and looking at our photo books helps the magic live on in our day to day lives.  If we are between trips and missing that very magical place, we can simply pull our book off the shelf and reminisce.

My children were just 2 and 3 years old the first time we went to Disney World with them and looking through our book periodically triggers different memories for them and always lots of fun questions!  I wouldn’t trade these precious memories for anything.

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
