Cast Member’s Corner: The Unsung Heroes of Disney

This week I want to focus on some people on the Disney Properties that are not always considered Cast Members, and those Cast Members that you never really see or think about.  When you go through the gates and on to property, even when you get to the parks, you have a feeling of being safe.  You tend to leave your worries behind that you may otherwise feel in other amusement parks.  This is due to those who are Cast Members or other emergency specialists that you hardly see.

Those of us who have been to the Disney properties may have seen Disney security.  They generally drive around in white vehicles with the Disney font in red on the side of the vehicles reading “Security.”  (They do not however have Mickey ears on the top of them like I always wished they did.  As my parents pointed out to me, it’s probably a good thing that they don’t so that people do take them seriously.)

But back on topic, these Cast Members are constantly patrolling the parking lots and parks.  When you’re trying to find a parking spot and see one of those lifted booths, there’s usually one of the security guards up there keeping an eye on the parking lot.  If you can’t find your car or can’t start it, security has been known to lend you a helping hand.

These same security Cast Members also tend to walk through the parks.  You’ll first notice them at the bag checkpoints before you enter the parks.  They generally wear blue button up shirts with a Disney shield and nametag with black hats.  I knew a security guard who used to patrol around Fantasyland, a hot spot for lost parents.  Whenever we had a lost parent situation he would ask the child for their autograph and call them whatever character they were dressed as.  He often carried around stickers for the children as well.  Many times you may not see these Cast Members but they are certainly around keeping you safe.

When you drive or ride the buses around property in Walt Disney World you may have noticed some pretty interesting Fire Department themed buildings.  These are in fact working firehouses.  Disney built four working fire stations on the property to ensure quick response and safety for all guests and Cast Members alike.  Reedy Creek Fire Department also has brave men and women station at the parks with a cart to help as quickly as possible before more help arrives from the stations. To ensure that Cast Members are prepared for anything, Reedy Creek works with Disney too by running drills along side the Cast Members.  Reedy Creek Fire Fighters have been known to be dispatched to the needed location in forty-five seconds or less.  They also have the locations emergency equipment throughout the property to help Cast Members the best they can over the phone before help arrives.  These wonderful fire fighters are around keeping us safe whether we see them or not.

I have written about the nurses on property before and how they can get you help with band-aids and taking your temperature.  They also can refer you to Celebration hospital if it is more serious.  All of these Cast Members and non-Cast Member’s alike are behind the scenes and in the public eye to keep Disney’s guests safe.  I personally would like to say thank you to each and every one of them.  Without them I would never feel as safe as I always have on my Disney Vacations.  So thank you!  And this time I have my faith and trust in you, and wishing you mountains of pixie dust every day!

Jess was born and raised on Long Island, New York but once college began so did her adventures. She’s lived in Florida, Wisconsin, and now South Carolina. Her family is part of the Disney Vacation Club and has been visiting since she was a little girl, and continuously goes every year. Besides being a big Disney fan she has also been a Disney Cast Member working in Magic Kingdom, and she counts it as one of the most magical experiences. She worked with everyone’s favorite elephant Dumbo, Cinderella’s Carousel, and Mickey’s Philharmagic. Jess has also visited Disneyland, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, and gone on two Disney Cruises. She has so many great memories from Disney besides running half marathons and 5ks, birthday parties, and family reunions. If asked where she would want to go it is almost always Disney, and when asked why, it is almost always because she can eat awesome gluten free food! And it doesn’t hurt that there is always faith, trust, and pixie dust with magic in the air!
