Halloween Horror Nights is Universal Orlando Resort’s yearly Halloween scare-fest that takes over Universal Studios Florida on select nights in September and October. This event has been held for over 25 years and has only gotten more and more popular. If you’re not familiar with the event, this will give you a quick overview of what to expect, as well as a few tips for visiting. Please note that Halloween Horror Nights is a very frightening event, and Universal does not recommend it for children under 13.
First of all, what happens at Halloween Horror Nights? The main attractions are the elaborately themed mazes or houses. They work like a traditional walk-through haunted house, but with much more detail and theming. This year’s houses have not all been announced yet, but the 10 new ones include Stranger Things, Universal Monsters, Depths of Fear, and Nightingales Blood Pit. There are also typically several original-concept houses. At the event you’ll also find scare zones, or outdoor themed areas where scareactors roam around and scare guests as they walk past. Unlike the houses, scare zones don’t have a queue and you can walk through at your leisure. There are also typically a couple of live shows at the event, as well.
Halloween Horror Nights is a hard-ticket event, meaning that you need a special ticket separate from regular park admission in order to enter. Ticket prices are date-specific and vary depending on the night. Universal also offers Express Passes for the event. While purchasing Express Passes can be expensive, I strongly encourage anyone visiting to at least consider buying Express Pass. This is a very popular event and lines for the mazes can reach 1-2 hours even on less crowded nights. Express Pass can make visiting the event a lot more enjoyable.
When visiting Halloween Horror Nights, you want to be sure to have a plan. Since the houses are very popular, visit some first thing and some at the end of the night to minimize waits. In the middle of the evening, when the lines are longest, visit the scare zones and live shows. Even if you have Express Pass, note that you can only use Express once at each house. Having a plan and visiting some early or late is a good idea if you want to go through any twice. If you do not have Express Pass, be sure to have a plan and be prepared to wait, as lines will grow very quickly for most houses.
