Exploring Disney: Blasting Off on Mission SPACE

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be on board a spaceship shooting to the stars and beyond? You have your chance when you experience Mission: SPACE in Epcot. This super cool and fun attractions has two versions – Mission Orange and Mission Green – so that those with of us with weaker stomachs can still experience what it’s like to blast off into space.

On both versions of this ride, each person on the 4-cadet crew is assigned a different roles and tasks. Each mission will have a navigator, pilot, commander or engineer. During your flight you will initiate a sequence of procedures as your mission progresses based on your role, so be prepared! You will train for your mission on the X-2 Deep Space Shuttle at the International Space Training Center, so that you’ll know what you need to do. Do you have what it takes to help your craft make it into space and back?

Let’s look at each side!

Mission Orange – The Orange Mission uses a centrifuge that spins and tilts similar to the G-forces of a spacecraft launch on your trip to Mars. This experience is for cadets 44” or taller and is the more intense version, so you must be in good health, not have high blood pressure. This is not the version to ride for anyone who is prone to motion sickness. (I have not ridden this side, but my son and his wife love it.)

Mission Green – This version is considered to be the less intense mission and is often better for families. This spacecraft is situated in a motion simulator, so you will circle the earth in a still exhilarating mission – just without the centrifuge-causing motion sickness. This mission is for cadets 40” and taller. While it does not spin the motion simulator is similar to Star Tours, so you’ll want to take that into account. Personally, I can handle the Green Mission easily. If need be I can look down at the controls rather than the screen.

After your mission there is an Advance Training Lab as you exit where you can experience other space and high tech play areas and games.

Have you ridden both missions? Which was your favorite?

Debbie and her husband live in Chattanooga, TN. They both are huge Disney fans and try to visit the most Magical Place on Earth at least once a year, if possible. They are enjoying taking each of their now 10 grandchildren and hope to also take their great granddaughter in the near future. One of their favorite trips has been visiting Disney with adults only, including one trip when their son proposed to his girlfriend. Each trip begins with the planning, which can take up to a year, beginning with how to get the grandkids excited about their upcoming trip. They have surprised some of them the day before they left, while the latest one had “presents” every 10 days starting at 90 days all leading up to an exciting trip with her parents along also. Their philosophy on Disney Trips? “Each trip is completely different, like visiting Walt Disney World for the first time.” They both enjoy all that Disney has to offer, but enjoy Animal Kingdom and EPCOT the most. It is their goal that everyone who visits Walt Disney World has a magical trip with lots of memories to last a life time.
