A Disney Day in Chicago

For most people, the ideals of the holiday season center on spending time with friends and family.  My husband and I found a way to incorporate Disney magic into a day trip with our extended family to downtown Chicago.  Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry currently has an exhibit titled “D23 Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives” which runs through May 4.  We were also lucky enough to go while they also had their “Christmas of the World and Holiday of Lights” display which includes a 45 foot tree with Mickey flair.

We went to the museum on Black Friday as our birthday gift to ourselves. I’m so glad we got this opportunity!  The Christmas display was conveniently located right outside of the entrance to the D23 exhibit.  The D23 exhibit is a special ticketed exhibit; therefore, does cost a little extra ($9) but is considered as an add-on with your admission to the museum.

The D23 exhibit tells of the life and history of Mr. Walt Disney and his ensuring empire- including the Disney Parks.  They had a nice tribute set up for “Mary Poppins” which I’m sure was to tie-in with the upcoming movie, “Saving Mr. Banks.”   There were some really neat one-of-a-kind items such as an “It’s a Small World” doll, costumes and props from Disney movies, and a script for “Steamboat Willie.”

The 45 foot Christmas tree was the centerpiece for the Holiday display.  There were not-so-hidden Mickey ornaments, twinkle lights, and Mickey and Pluto decorating the tree. I loved the classic Mickey banners that were hung over the room.  In fact, there were little signs of Disney all throughout the Museum which really made me feel the pixie dust all day.  If you are anywhere close to Chicago, I would highly recommend going to the Museum of Science and Industry to check this exhibit out.  Since I know I didn’t do justice to this Disney day, check out my pictures on The Affordable Mouse Facebook page.  😀
