Disney Fun From Around the World: Week of December 27, 2010

2010 may be coming to a close, but I wouldn’t dream of letting you end this year…and start the next one….without sharing a few favorite Disney blog posts that I came across before we left for Disney World. So raise your glass of champagne in toast to the coming of a New Year….and to our favorite Disney bloggers as well. 🙂

One of my favorite things to do there is The Animation Academy at Disney’s Hollywood Studios . And then if you are wondering what will be new and fun at DHS next year, well they’ve got that too! What’s coming in 2011 to Hollywood Studios

Our Evolving Disney World Vacation…and Learning to Adjust

I am a planner by nature….and I love planning a Disney World vacation more than just about anything.

So planning a Disney trip 7-12 months in advance provides plenty to think about prior to the trip, and for the most part, this is a good thing. For example, having the chance to pour over menus, researching various accommodation options, finding fun, new, interesting things to see and do…. all make the time spent while waiting to leave fun…and it goes faster that way too.

The downside of this is when things change. Sometimes they change in minor ways that simply involve changing things like an advanced dining reservation time. On the other hand, sometimes a lot of things end up changing…and changing plans make us planners…well….a little uncomfortable.

Unless you learn, as I am learning on this trip, to just go with the flow. 🙂

Back in May I started documenting my vacation planning for our New Years trip to Walt Disney World. Since that time, there have been a few minor changes to our trip. We have changed:

  1. The number of people going
  2. Where we are staying for all 4 nights (this has changed several times)
  3. Where we are eating (this has changed several times as well)

And we haven’t left yet.

But it’s all good, because it has been a great lesson in flexibility for me. 🙂 I am adjusting as we go, learning to be ok with change, and trying to focus on what really matters: spending a few days with my family in a happy, carefree place.

So, here is what I know about our trip at this moment, 3 days before we leave:

  1. Our flight leaves (weather permitting…yes I worry about this in December) at 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30
  2. We are now staying the first two nights at Yacht Club. A big surprise and a long story about how this occurred…but we are quite pleased to be within walking distance of Epcot for New Year’s Eve.
  3. We will eat at San Angel Inn our first night and then see the final Candlelight Processional.
  4. New Year’s Eve will be at Epcot (day and evening) and we are eating at Chefs de France.
  5. We are starting New Year’s Day with a big breakfast at Cape May Café
  6. Dinner that evening is at ‘Ohana and then we will visit Magic Kingdom for the last night of Holiday Wishes.
  7. We move to Saratoga Springs for the last 2 nights of our stay on Jan. 1
  8. Dinner our last night is currently at the Turf Club Bar and Grill at Saratoga Springs and then we’ll visit Hollywood Studios to see the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.
  9. And our flight leaves for home at 6 p.m. on January 3.

This is, of course, all subject to change….which at this point, I am fully expecting it to. 🙂

Beyond this, we will see how things go, which usually works best during this very busy season anyway.

As to my preparations for leaving, seeing that we depart in 3 days? Well, we had that little Holiday over the weekend, so there is a lot left for me to do this week. But I have done our online check-in, ordered our Dining Plans, and cancelled our papers and mail. And I have our DME luggage tags, and Park Hopper passes in hand, so that’s kind of important.

So with daily checks of the weather forecast, we’re in the homestretch and planning for packing has begun. It’s definitely been a “different” kind of trip for me so far…..and to be honest, the planning changes have been kind of fun!

(But shhhhhhh don’t tell anyone, I don’t want to lose my membership in Planners Anonymous! 🙂 )

Want to follow along on our trip? I’ll be posting periodic updates and pictures on our Facebook Page.

Disney Fun From Around the World: Week of December 13, 2010

Greetings Disney Friends and Happy Holidays! How’re those Christmas preparations coming along? I know we only have a week and there’s tons to do, but here’s a reason to take a break from the festivities for a few minutes: Enjoy some pretty cool Disney blog posts from this past week!

Let’s start with news from the Disney Parks Blog about the New Fantasyland Expansion Update . Then enjoy some seasonal inspiration for DIY (Disney-ize It Yourself) Holiday Hostess Gifts

Some of my favorites from Chip and Co included this helpful post from Ken: Best Things I Love About Disney – Disney’s Magical Express as well as one from Allie that I relate to: Why I Love the Epcot Resort Area. Then, if you will be visiting Disney World over the next couple of weeks, you will want to know Where to find Santa Claus at Walt Disney World

Stuart at the Disney Driven Life wrote a touching article this week about Walt Disney’s ultimate vision for his parks…and anyone who has ever visited Disney to just “escape” for a few days, will appreciate his thoughts: BUILDING A DREAM

Over at the Disney Food Blog there were the usual informative posts, including this Guest Review of Grand Floridian Cafe. I also enjoyed learning about these Swan and Dolphin Holiday Treats. And if you have a little one who will only eat chicken nuggets, be sure to learn where you can find Disney Food For Families: The Fab Four of Kid Food — Pizza, Pasta, Hot Dogs and Chicken Nuggets

Kelly over at the Disney Guru shared some really helpful information in two of her posts this week: Money Saver Monday!! Pack those personal items and save more money and Tuesday’s Top Ten First Timer Tips

Lastly, Studios Central had a very interesting article about Why Hollywood Studios for New Years is the best option. It isn’t where we have celebrated New Year’s Eve in the past, nor will we be there this year…but he makes some very good points!

Alrighty everyone, that’s it for this week! Now, back to work: if you’re celebrating Christmas, you have a week to finish getting ready! 🙂

The Affordable Mouse is Celebrating a Birthday!

I am excited to be celebrating our First Birthday this week! One year ago I made the decision to move The Affordable Mouse from a little blog with occasional posts to a “grown-up” website and blog. Just a year later, we have grown to be quite the community, with a Facebook page now as well, that is closing in on having 350 fans…and growing!

As I begin our second year, it is a great time for me to share with you a few things that I am working on, that will all hopefully be finalized before the end of 2010…as well as some ideas I have for the coming year:

  • Website re-design: As our community has grown, it is important for me to be able to provide a better way for you to find the information that you need to save money at Disney World. In addition, I have things that I have been wanting to add to the site as well 🙂 so this is the perfect time to for me to do some re-designing. My plans are that the finished product will be done before Christmas and once complete will provide an improved experience for you! Stay tuned for details!
  • Affordable Disney Dining Guide: This project that was born as a result of your responses to a survey that I ran in the spring, is in the editing stages now, and so is nearly finished! I currently expect to release it as an e-book right after the 1st of the year, just in time for your 2011 vacation planning!
  • The Affordable Mouse Community: In many ways, this part is the most important to me, because it is at the heart of why I started The Affordable Mouse in the first place. My vision for this site has always been one of a community of Disney World-lovers, where ideas, tips, and suggestions for saving money on a Disney World vacation are shared. I may have started it….but my hope over the coming years, is that this site and blog will eventually grow into a place where anyone who needs help making Disney vacations affordable, can come to ask questions. Our online “family” is pretty diverse: many of you are experienced Walt Disney World veterans, with many visits under your belt…but many of you found us because you are brand new, and looking for help. And one of the things that I love about Disney folk…is that we are a friendly, helpful sort of folk, willing to share advice and provide help to other Disney folk! 🙂

So, it is my hope, in 2011, to grow The Affordable Mouse community by getting more of YOU involved! Our Facebook      page is certainly a start, where a number of you already comment and share ideas, and I hope that will continue to expand. But beyond that, please feel free to ask questions there as well, and don’t be shy or worry about it being a “dumb” question: we’ve all been there once! Please also share your thoughts and ideas by commenting on our daily blog posts: I would love to see some real conversations begin to start in the comments every day! If you have experience with the topic, please share. If you have something helpful to add, please share that too!

It is here with the Blog that I am truly hoping to grow our community! As you know, Brenda recently began contributing articles on a weekly basis and she has done a wonderful job of adding an additional viewpoint, as well as some fresh, new ideas. I would love to expand on this and have more of you share your expertise as well! So if you like to write, and would be interested in contributing articles to The Affordable Mouse blog, please let me know! Send me an email at nancy@theaffordablemouse.com and let me know your background and Disney “history”. Professional experience is certainly not required: what is needed however, is a love for Walt Disney World, and an interest in sharing ways to save money on a Disney vacation.  It is also not necessary to contribute weekly either: if you just wish to share an article once or twice a month that would be awesome too! (Please be aware though, that this is, unfortunately, not a paid position: your only pay will be sharing the Disney magic with others. 🙂 )

Lastly, I would really love to know what ideas YOU have for growing our Disney World money-saving community! Message boards/forums? Monthly podcasts or webinars? YouTube videos? Something else? Please let me know your thoughts: Growing our community is one of my goals for 2011, but clearly it can’t be done without you! So send me an email, post on the Facebook page, or comment on a blog post and let me know your ideas for creating a sharing community!

Thanks so much for reading, and thanks so much for making 2010 such an amazing year for The Affordable Mouse! “Meeting” all of you is something that I am truly thankful for…and I can’t wait to see what great things 2011 has in store for all of us!

Tuesday Disney Tips: How to Use Your Disney Give A Day, Get A Day Fastpass Card

I just got back from my 10-day Walt Disney World vacation. When I arrive home it is very hard to decide what to write about first as there is so much to say. Since the Give A Day, Get A Day volunteers must use their vouchers by December 15 or lose them, I decided to cover the Give A Day (GAD) Fastpass option for anyone planning to use their voucher during an upcoming trip.

If you are among the one million people who have volunteered this year and received a voucher, you know that there are several options for using the voucher: a one-day theme park ticket, a special GAD fastpass, an EarHat figurine with exclusive trading pin, or donating the park ticket to a participating charity.

My family of five volunteered, so we received five vouchers. We decided to use them on the fastpass option, so I am going to make using the voucher for a special GAD fastpass crystal clear so there will be no guessing involved on your part.

Since each of us volunteered, I had a voucher with my name on it, one with my husband’s name, and one for each of my children bearing their names; five vouchers in total, each one good for one park for one day. We decided to use them on the most crowded days during the Thanksgiving holiday.  We used one voucher on Sunday at Epcot (I will use that example for the purposes of explaining how to use them), one on Monday at Hollywood Studios, one on Tuesday at Magic Kingdom, one on Wednesday at Animal Kingdom and the last one on Friday at Hollywood Studios again.

Step 1

First and foremost, be sure to pack your voucher(s) and make sure that you take a valid ID for the person named on each voucher. A valid ID is considered to be one of the following: valid government-issued passport, valid driver’s license including a photo, or valid government-issued photo ID. For children under 18 who do not have any of the previously listed IDs, a copy of a birth certificate is acceptable. School IDs are not considered government-issued photo IDs and will not be accepted.

Step 2

Take your entire party to the Will Call window at the park. This window is located in the front of the park before you enter the gate. Take the voucher, a valid multi-day park ticket and the appropriate bearer’s ID with you to the Will Call window. Give the cast member the voucher and the appropriate ID and tell them you would like to get the special fastpasses for your party. The cast member will give you a volunteer button to wear.

The Honorary VoluntEAR button is very special. Cast members all around the park thanked us for volunteering.

The cast member will then ask to see the room key for each person in your party. You may have up to 6 people in your party. Once he sees the room keys for each member of the party, he will give each of you one of these little beauties – a special fastpass card. It is a hard card similar to your “key to the kingdom” park ticket.

These will be used for inserting into the fastpass machine at your favorite rides. My nephew joined us at the park, so we got a total of 6 GAD fastpass cards.

The cast member will then give you one of the Disney’s Fastpass Special Exchange Card Guides that explains how to use your card. The one shown below is from Epcot.

As you can see, there are two different groups of fastpass rides: the Donald Group and the Daisy Group. On that day, the Donald Group included Test Track and Soarin’. The Daisy Group included Mission Space, Living with the Land, Captain EO and Maelstrom. Each of the special fastpass cards allows the bearer to ride 3 rides from each group.

Step 3

Insert your special GAD Fastpass into the fastpass kiosk (just as you would your park ticket) and it will give you a fastpass with a return time that starts immediately.

In our case, we had 6 people and each of us could ride 3 rides from Donald and 3 rides from Daisy; for a grand total of 36 free, immediate rides while in the parks during the busy Thanksgiving holiday season. In other words, when we got to the line for Soarin which was 70 minutes, we put our card into the fastpass machine and it issued a fastpass with the current time on it and we rode right away.

For this park, since there are only two rides listed in the Donald Group, we used two on Test Track and one on Soarin’. Other parks have 3 listed under this group, such as Hollywood Studios that listed the choices as Aerosmith’s Rock N Rollercoaster, Tower of Terror and Toy Story Mania. In that case, all 6 of us rode together, one time on each ride.

The fastpass is good at the park you are visiting for that day only. They are only good until the regular park closing time at the end of the day in which you received it. During Extra Magic Hours they are not supposed to be valid, so I didn’t try it.

Even if all the fastpass machines are out of passes and closed for the day, you can still get fastpasses with these cards. Please note that in some instances, the machines were completely out so a cast member had to write us a special fastpass. Also be aware that not everyone knows what the special passes are. We had someone who appeared to be a manager at the Kilimanjaro Safari ride at Animal Kingdom that went ahead and tried our card even though their fastpass machine was out, and it worked. When another guest asked him how we were able to get fastpasses, he told her because we had these special cards that happened to work. He told her she could get them from the front of the park and I had to explain to her that they were for special Give A Day volunteer passes.

Please remember that these special fastpasses do not affect your regular park ticket at all. So, you are still able to use your park ticket to get regular fastpasses for a later time. We used ours in conjunction with our room keys for the maximum time-saving capabilities. They were great for us to use during this busy season and we really appreciated having them.

Hope this will make using your voucher for a GAD fastpass card easier. Enjoy your trip and remember to let us know all about it!
