Thrifty Thursday: My All-Time Favorite Disney Ride: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

I am a Disney thrill-seeker, no doubt about it. I love the Rock N Rollercoaster, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Expedition Everest, Space Mountain; all the great rides. But the ride that gives me the biggest thrill at Walt Disney World, and is thus my hands-down favorite, is the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

The first thing I do upon entering Disney’s Hollywood Studios is walk straight ahead to Sunset Boulevard and make a sharp right turn heading to a 13-story structure known as the Tower of Terror. I check the wait clock to see whether I am going to get a fast pass or just wait in line. In most cases, I will get a fast pass for The Rock N Rollercoaster and just wait in the Tower of Terror line.

The line twists and turns through an ungroomed, misty, eerie courtyard. While winding through the landscape, I love listening to people around me nervously discussing how apprehensive they are about the ride, and even whether or not they should be in line at all. All is calm for a few minutes but then, without warning, the doors several stories up open and all I can hear is screaming before the riders take their next drop! It sounds like the riders are terrified, adding to the sinister chuckle I get listening to the unsuspecting new riders around me. I would guess, though, that if someone interviewed these newbies on their way out of the ride, they would say that they thought it was awesome!

As I get closer and closer to going inside the “hotel,” I get more and more excited. After queuing through the dusty lobby of the old Hollywood Tower Hotel, I am directed into the library for the pre-show, which is a short film hosted by Rod Serling, creator of the old Twilight Zone television series. In the momentary darkness, I start to feel the adrenalin pumping while I am then guided into the Hotel’s boiler room.

Once the doors open to the boiler room, the butterflies start flying. I have been on this ride probably 50 times or more, but every time I ride it the butterflies show up. I think that is part of the fun!

The cast member, dressed in a vintage bellhop costume, taunts everyone by thanking us for “dropping in.” I am then directed to my appropriate row and seat number which is painted on the floor in front of the place where the elevator will pick me up. Finally, our “freight elevator” arrives and I find my appropriate spot just as it was on the floor diagram and get into my seat and put on my seatbelt. Note: there used to be a bar and only one special seat had a seatbelt, but Disney added to the excitement by changing the safety mechanism for all seats to seatbelts only. I am ALL smiles at this point; high-fiving my kids and getting ready to go. I can’t wait until the doors close and we are off on what is my all-time favorite ride.

We take off and as the elevator rises up, I am ready for the visual. The doors open again as the “freight elevator” glides through mysterious hotel passageways showing us ghostly images of former guests. Then, the elevator enters the shaft. It is pitch black and chilly. Then I feel it…our elevator is locked into place. Here we go!

There is a 130-foot free-fall drop and then it shoots quickly up, then down, then up; plummeting again and again in random drop sequences. When the doors open, I smile and get ready for the camera flash, look out over the park, then laugh at all the people with me as we are all screaming our lungs out but thoroughly enjoying the experience. Once we are back on the ground and the ride is over, I think to myself, this is what I have been waiting for all year and I am grateful to be back! I hope you will drop in on this baby during your next trip!

Disney Holiday Gift-Giving: Luggage and Bags Disney Style

Essential for any Disney vacation are those items you will need to “keep stuff in”, that is luggage, backpacks, tote bags, and diaper bags. The thing is, while these things are necessities, why not add a little “Disney” to something that is basically functional….and make it fun? The benefit of this is, of course, bringing the Disney love along with you PLUS having that happy Disney reminder day in and day out after you get home!

With that in mind then, here are some of my favorite Disney travel accessories (a few of which may end up on my Christmas wish list for our upcoming Disney World trip):

Disney Princess Luggage: On our first trip to Walt Disney World, one of the things that our daughter (then age 7) was most excited about was having her “own suitcase”. She would have loved the princesses on the outside. I would have loved the hard case and wheels that make it easy for little ones to take care of their own bag.

Disney Rolling Light-Up Buzz Lightyear Luggage: The solution for little boys, this case will help future Space Rangers to easily travel to Disney World, or Infinity and Beyond, whichever they prefer.

Blue 3-Piece Rolling Disney Luggage Set: For the grown-up on your list (or maybe you?? 🙂  ) I personally really like this 3 piece set for the sizes available and especially like that the duffle is wheeled. Plus, I love the blue color too. Yeah…this one’s going on my Christmas wish list.

Black 3-Piece Disney Rolling Mickey Mouse Luggage Set: This one’s for the person who really wants to have their Mickey on when traveling. One of the things I really like about this set is that you can EASILY pick out your luggage at baggage claim at the airport. 🙂

Tinkerbell Diaper Bag Backpack – Adjustable Shoulder Bag: Know someone who will be traveling to Disney World with a little one? A Disney diaper bag is a great gift idea. I love all the pockets on this one as well as the fact that it can be either a shoulder bag or back pack.

Disney Mickey Mouse Tote Bag: Having a tote bag of some sort is essential at the parks. At 15” x 17” this bag is roomy and it has a nice interior zippered compartment which I really like. Plus it’s just plain fun…..and also going on my Christmas list!

Disney Dooney & Bourke Black Tassle Tote: I will readily admit that this does NOT qualify as affordable….but it is gorgeous, and one can hope, right? Disney’s Dooney and Bourke collection is extremely popular and there are many different designs, patterns, and sizes that are available. And while this bag may or may not be in Santa’s budget this year, there are some smaller items like wallets, wristlets and such that can help you be stylishly Disney. But if we’re going to dream….then this is the one I’m dreaming of…..

Hope you found some great Disney Holiday gift items for your favorite Disney traveler…or for your own wishlist! Happy shopping!

Thrifty Thursday: Treasured Photos in All the Best Locations

I am sure you have noticed that the PhotoPass photographers are set up in all the very best locations throughout the parks. Whether it is right in front of Cinderella’s Castle, at the entrance to Epcot next to the monorail, in front of the Sorcerer’s hat or Expedition Everest, or countless other great locations in the parks they are positioned in all of the prime locations. If you did not receive a PhotoPass card in your travel package, they will gladly give you one free of charge to carry with you in order to take advantage of all the best photo opps with your family.

I love having all of our memories captured on film. I have photo albums full of Disney memories and I treasure each one of the pictures with my family. Professional photographs can be expensive, though, and that is why I think the very best thing about the PhotoPass photographers is that they are happy to take a picture using your personal camera as well. All you have to do is hand them your PhotoPass card as well as your personal camera and they will take all the pictures for you. This is especially welcome to the person in your family who is usually responsible for taking photographs and never actually appears to be on the trip.

Personally, I appreciate the fact that Disney offers this service to their guests, rather than making families feel that they must purchase photos they really cannot afford. It is just another free little extra they have decided to throw in to make everyone’s trip more memorable.

I usually do purchase some of the PhotoPass pictures, especially for special photo gifts, but I like knowing I don’t have to. Take advantage of this free service the next time you are in the parks and keep smiling!

The Great Refillable Disney Mug Debate

Refillable mugs: A great way to save some Disney dining dollars…and one of the most widely discussed, hotly debated, and misunderstood programs that Disney has available. Whether you have ever purchased a refillable mug, received one as part of a Dining Plan, or wondered where all these people got those cool looking mugs…you probably have had a few questions about how they work.

You have questions and we have answers. 🙂

So, let’s clear it all up and make you an expert in the Great Refillable Mug Debate! Following are Ten Do’s and Don’ts of Refillable Mugs that everyone should know:

  1. Do know that each resort property no longer has different collectible mugs for that specific hotel. All mugs are now one standard shape and size   for all properties.
  2. Do refill your mug only at the resort hotel you are staying at or at a “sister” resort hotel (such as Yacht Club and Beach Club).
  3. Do refill your mug with unlimited refills of any of the following: coffee, iced/hot tea, soda, lemonade/fruit punch (where available), and hot chocolate
  4. Do understand that the mugs that are placed in your hotel room are for sale, and that if you use one, you will be charged for it. 🙂
  5. Do know that you can get your free refills at your hotel property, at the following places: food courts, quick service locations, and pool bars. You can also get refills at Beaches & Cream at the Beach Club and at the Boardwalk Bakery and Coffee Cart at the Boardwalk.
  6. Do not refill your mug with milk, orange juice or apple juice.
  7. Do not ask to use your mug for alcoholic drinks.
  8. Do not try to use your mug at other hotel properties that you are not staying at (admittedly hard for Disney to enforce since the mugs all look alike now…but your conscience knows 🙂 ).
  9. Do not try to use your mug at the parks for anything other than water. (Water parks have a separate mug that you can buy there.)
  10. Do not bring your mug from previous years to use on this trip for free refills. A sign at the refill stations clearly states that the mugs are for use at that hotel for the duration of your visit. Only. Sorry.

Now that you know all that, here are few other details about those little mugs that you may find helpful and/or interesting.

  • You can currently purchase one of these 16 oz. insulated mugs for around $13.99 (plus tax). No other purchase is required to get either your mug or your free, unlimited refills as noted above.
  • The following Dining Plans include a refillable mug for no additional charge: Quick Service, Deluxe, Premium, and Platinum Plans. The same rules apply.
  • Thanks to the Disney Food Blog, I learned something pretty darn cool that I never knew: Each self-service refillable mug location has a mug wash: a small sink right next to the soda dispenser, so that you can wash your mug out between drinks. So get your morning cup of coffee, rinse, and then get that lemonade to go!
  • There has also been some strong hints that Disney may be revising…or even do away with….the refillable mug program in the future. You can read about the details on the Disney Food Blog.

So there you have it. Everything you ever wanted to know about refillable mugs….and didn’t know who to ask. Glad to oblige. 🙂
