Smooth Sailing Ahead: Do You Need a Passport to Cruise?

Do I need a passport to cruise?

It’s a common question and as cruising is such a popular way to vacation – and becoming more popular every year – it’s worth taking a few minutes today to discuss.

The “official” answer is “it depends.” – If you look at the requirements listed by the cruise line, you’ll likely see some variation of the following: If your cruise starts and ends in two different countries, then you will need a passport. However, if your cruise is considered a “closed loop” cruise (starts and ends in the same country), you may not need a passport and can just use a driver’s license and birth certificate as documentation.

But – required, and recommended are two very different things!

It is always best to have a passport, even if not required. – Whether required or not, it’s for your protection to sail with one, and here’s why:

  1. Emergencies can happen: If you have a medical emergency or need to leave the cruise early for any reason, having a passport will allow you travel home or to a foreign country for treatment (you’ll need it in order to fly).
  2. Delays and missed connections: If your flight to the cruise port is delayed or canceled, you may need to take a later flight or connect through a foreign country. Having a passport will allow you to do that.
  3. Peace of mind: Knowing that you have a valid passport with you provides you peace of mind while making your travels less stressful.

Regardless of what is “required”, providing yourself one less thing to stress about if something goes awry on your trip (because, stuff DOES happen), is worth the cost of getting a passport. Besides, having one means that you’ll be ready for ANY trip you want to take, anywhere in the world!
