Located in the “Low Country” of South Carolina, and roughly an hour from the cities of Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia, Hilton Head is an island that offers 12 miles of beautifully fine sandy beaches, along with marshlands and canals, all offering a variety of ways to enjoy all that it has to offer. In a nod to the area’s history, Hilton Head Island is a planned community that is divided into subdivisions of beach properties known as “plantations” and as you drive around the island, with the lush vegetation and tall trees covered in Spanish moss, it’s often hard to even see that there are buildings – which is one of the island’s charms. While it’s a busy beach destination, it rarely feels busy due to the beautiful landscaping and careful planning of the communities.
Hilton Head offers in addition to the fabulous beaches, lots of shopping and dining opportunities, your typical “family beach fun” like mini golf, and for the adults, more than 33 championship golf courses as well. In fact, Hilton Head is a major golf destination with several PGA tours each year.
Biking is popular on Hilton Head and is a great way to get to where you want to go, with many miles of bike paths. As would be expected on an island near both sea, sound, and canals, boating is also a popular activity, with a number of fishing and “dolphin watching” tours offered.
And when you need a day off from the sun and sand, it is an easy drive to Savannah or Charleston for a wealth of additional and fun things to see and do!
