Tucked into the northwest corner of Wyoming, and sandwiched between Grand Teton National Park to the north and miles of national forest in every other direction, Jackson Hole offers the visitor a wide range of things to do on vacation. Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities, incredible scenery, a variety of wildlife, or prefer the chance to just relax and unwind at a resort spa – or all of the above – Jackson Hole has it all.

With the close proximity of Grand Teton National Park (and Yellowstone National Park a bit further north), Jackson Hole is a great place to stay to explore a beautiful part of the U.S. Opportunities to hike are plentiful and the chance to encounter wildlife like elk are numerous. In fact, the National Elk Refuge provides an incredible opportunity to see elk up close, as the area’s herds seek food every winter in this massive non-enclosed sanctuary, while they wait for spring thaw.

Many folks when hearing “Jackson Hole” immediately think skiing, and for good reason. With some of the highest annual snowfalls along with the tallest lift rise in the U.S., the variety of ski resorts are testament that it is one of the best winter sports destinations in the country.

Nearby Grand Teton National Park provides visitors with some of the most incredible mountain views on the planet. The Teton Range rises above the Jackson Hole valley floor, with magnificent views of its snowcapped peaks including the 13,770 ft Grand Teton. The Snake River, which flows through the park, is a haven for fishing, wildlife watching and rafting in summer. Hikers and climbers can explore on foot, or visitors can choose to drive one of the scenic roads to take in panoramic views. Be sure to keep your eyes open, not only for the spectacular scenery, but also for glimpses of bear and moose among other types of wildlife.

When you’re ready to relax, you’ll have a number of ways to do so. The area now has a rich variety of art and performance venues, with live music along with several art and music festivals throughout the year. Stop by a museum or enjoy a show where you can learn about the area’s Wild West history. Or just soak your cares away in the Granite Hot Springs.

The best times to visit Jackson Hole will depend on what you want to do. If you’re a skier, then winter will be the season for you. If you’re looking for the best pricing – and fewest tourists – consider the months of April, May, September and October. Visitors traveling during these months will want to be aware however, that the weather during these shoulder seasons can be unpredictable – temperatures can range anywhere from the low 30s to the low 60s – so plan accordingly. As would be expected, rates will be at their highest in the summer with the large number of visitors that both Yellowstone and Grand Teton draw every year.
