Exploring Disney: Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

I had heard and seen little bits and pieces of information regarding the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom but had never looked into it further because it wasn’t something that was particularly interesting to me. That all changed when my 7 and 9 year old sons became very interested in various card collecting and trading card game endeavors.  For our upcoming trip, my husband suggested we looked into the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom “game” so I began doing my research.

Turns out, it looks like a pretty awesome interactive experience. What’s even better is that you get some pretty neat freebies from Disney…that’s not something you can do very often when it comes to your Disney World vacation. So how does it work?  As the name suggests, the game is only available at the Magic Kingdom. The concept of the game is that supervillain Hades is trying to take over the park and it’s your mission to defeat him.

First, your party must visit the Main Street Fire Station to sign up to participate in the game (yes, for free!). At that time, EACH person in your party is eligible to receive instructions, a map, your Portal Key Card, and 5 additional Spell cards (yes, for free! And yes, 5 cards per person!). Each day that you enter the park, your entire party is able to obtain 5 new Sorcerer cards. So for my family of 5, we are able to obtain 20 cards each day that we visit MK. The Portal Key Card is the master key to the game. This key card tracks your progress throughout the game. Players take their collection of cards to various portals throughout the park and “attack” Hades with the powers that various cards possess.

The map will direct you to each of the portals and once you begin playing, you will notice a Sorcerer’s crest on the ground. To defeat the villain, you will need to go to 4-5 different portals that will require different spells. You can play as much or little as you want, but you may have to beat several villains before having the chance to defeat the ultimate villain, Hades.

There are a total of 70 cards, so my family will get off to a pretty good start right off the bat (hopefully, and assuming we don’t end up with too many duplicates). You are able to trade with other guests if they have something you need and vice versa. If we visit MK three times during our trip, we have a pretty good chance of obtaining the majority of the cards, although some are rarer than others.

If you DO accomplish the big task of defeating Hades, you can earn an additional 5-pack of cards. You can advance to the next difficulty level if you complete the first one. There are special cards created for special events, so be on the lookout for those. While official binders are available for this beautiful and interesting card collection, my suggestion is to bring a smaller (wallet sized) case for being able to quickly file and find your cards.

Have you tried to defeat Hades? What are your thoughts about the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom experience?
