We like to use our card during the year to save up the Rewards Dollars to use for the souvenirs or snacks we KNOW we are going to buy each trip. About a month before we leave, we go online and order our Disney Rewards Redemption Cards so they will arrive in the mail in plenty of time (they are re-loadable for future rewards).
