Bucket List Dreams: Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

We have always dreamed of staying at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, but the price isn’t really in our budget. Why the “Poly” (as it’s lovingly referred to by Disney enthusiasts)? What’s not to love?

It has a Hawaiian vibe, one of the coolest pools, the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show experience (temporarily unavailable due to Covid-19), some of the most sought after resort dining options, and in words borrowed from the real estate world, Location, Location, Location! Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is on the monorail line, located next to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Proximity to the Magic Kingdom has, for years, made this resort (along with the Grand Floridian and Disney’s Contemporary Resort) one of the most desirable on property. Magic Kingdom fireworks can be seen from the Poly’s beach area. This resort opened along with Walt Disney World on October 1, 1971. It’s a true original and continues to stand the test of time.

Okay, now that you’re convinced to add this resort to your bucket list too, how are we going to afford this magical stay? We have visited the resort for meals and just to enjoy the ambiance on multiple trips but have never been able to commit to such an expensive room rate. There are however, a couple of ways to make this dream a reality!

Buying into the Disney Vacation Club is something a lot of guests ask about, but I’m no expert on either subject so I’ll just leave it at that – something readers can research if you feel so inclined. Alternatively, I would prefer a resort-only stay booked by a travel expert who specializes in Disney, such as The Affordable Mouse. In certain seasons, you may be able to snag great deals on resort only stays. The more expensive the room, the bigger the discount so this might really be a wonderful option for saving a chunk of change on a deluxe room. No one helps you stay on top of changing rates and new promotions as a Disney travel agent. Skipping the parks actually serves a dual purpose – aside from saving money on the cost of tickets, you will have time to monorail hop over to Disney’s Contemporary Resort or the Grand Floridian to see what all those resorts have to offer. That’s assuming you somehow tire from lounging around the Lava Pool eating Dole Whips from the Pineapple Lanai. You could dine at a different Disney resort restaurant for every meal and still not experience them all.

Another option is a split stay – meaning you might stay 3 nights at a value resort then switch resorts and splurge for the rest of your trip by staying 4 nights at a deluxe, such as the Polynesian Village Resort.

And to state the obvious, you’re going to want to save, save, save. There are lots of ways (and lots of articles out there) about how to go about this. My favorite suggestions include a Disney Savings Jar and by responsibly using a Disney Visa by Chase and accumulating rewards points.

We’ll get there, one of these days! What’s on your Disney Bucket List?

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
