Affordable Disney: Theme Park Ticket Options

Last week we talked about some of the things to think about when deciding what type of Disney park tickets you will get, and the basic ticket options that are available. There are a couple of other things you will want to consider when choosing the right tickets.

As you decide on your tickets, you will want to think about:

  • Are there other things I would like do besides the 4 main parks?
  • How many days in the next year will I be able to visit?

If the answer to the first question is “yes”, then consider the option to add the water parks. This option will allow you multiple visits to Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach Water Parks, with the number of visits depending on how many days your tickets are for. While this will, of course, add to the cost of your tickets, it is usually less expensive to do this than pay for a separate one day admission to either water park. So if water parks interest you and you plan to go at least once, this is worth adding. The only caveat here is that the water parks may or may not be open depending on the time of year you visit. Usually one of the two is closed for refurbishment at times during the slower winter months. In addition, while the water parks have heated pools, if it gets too cold (and that can happen in Florida!), they will not open. So consider the likelihood of going to a water park carefully before adding this option to your tickets.

As to how many days you plan to visit Walt Disney World over the next year, if you expect to have several visits throughout the year, you might consider purchasing an annual pass. There are two types of annual park passes:

  • Disney Platinum Plus Pass: this pass includes admission to all 4 parks, multiple times per day, both water parks, ESPN Complex and Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course. You can also enjoy PhotoPass downloads, up to 20% savings on selected dining and merchandise and parking at each theme park. This pass is about $950/year per person.
  • If the Plus Pass is more than you will enjoy, then look into the Platinum Pass instead. You can enjoy the same 4 park admission with the park hopper option and the PhotoPass downloads, but does not include the water parks or the Oak Trail Golf course. This option is about $850/year per person.
  • For those who really don’t want to visit a park, but do want to enjoy the water parks only, you can purchase a water park annual pass. This provides unlimited visits to Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach water parks during normal operating hours.

Whether the cost of any of the annual pass options are worth it for you will depend on how many days you plan to visit over the coming year, and will require you to use your trusty calculator and do a bit of math to see if an annual pass is a good choice for you.
