Tuesday Disney Tips: What’s In Your Disney Collection?

I know this seems strange as my Tuesday Disney Tip usually has a tip or two from me to you, but I am having the devil of a time trying to figure out about Disney collectibles and I really need your help.

I have an extensive collection of Disney snowglobes (some are pictured here). I truly enjoy looking at them and turning on the lights, and enjoying the music and motion. You may have read about my favorite in my “Disney Favorites” article.

As many of you know, I am expecting my very first grandchild in late October. In my mind, there is no time like the present to start a Disney collection for my new grand-princess. The problem is that I am truly stumped.

Should I choose miniature snowglobes, stamps, vinylmation, pressed coins? I can’t really collect figurines or anything with a character theme because I don’t know who she will choose as her favorite in the years to come. I feel the same applies to pins. A new Disney Christmas ornament each year is a given. Still, I sure could use your help with some ideas for her collection.

I would like to purchase the first of these collectibles during my upcoming trip in a couple of weeks, so any and all ideas will be greatly appreciated. I certainly want to get Princess Aleyah started off on the right Disney footing after all.

Thanks so much for your input and have a Disney day!

I think you were on the right track with the snowglobes and the miniature snowglobes. It sounds like you already know you’re having a granddaughter and snowglobes are always popular with young girls. They’re colorful room decorations and, as you noted, often have lights and a music box built into them. What’s not to love? You could start with Minnie Mouse, Tinker Bell, and the classic princesses without having to worry too much about picking something from her favorite movie.

I would avoid the made-to-be-collectibles or anything that comes in a limited edition. Such things are best if they convey the emotions of a moment in time for the collector. And since they rarely hold their original value, it’s best not to think of anything you might get in those terms anyway.

Speaking of emotions, I was originally going to suggest starting with a small Mickey plush that you could give her for her first birthday. Something she’ll play with and carry for many years. That’s the sort of thing I think she’ll really treasure and always remember you by. Good luck!

Richard you make some excellent points, especially about the perceived “value” of the collectibles: a Mickey plush will be more meaningful when she is little than the most expensive limited edition. Thank you for stopping by and sharing!

Thank you so much, Richard. I do indeed intend to give her a soft, lovable Mickey once she is a little older. Your suggestions are awesome. Thanks again.

I vote for Mickey ears! There are so many styles these days. That could be a very nice collection… with many ways of displaying them! 🙂 And they can all be embroidered with her name and year to commemorate when she got them!
