Thrifty Thursday: Free Fun at Yacht and Beach Club Resorts

Yacht and Beach Clubs (© Mouse on the Mind)If you have ever wished you could vacation in New England, circa 1800, then let me welcome you to Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts! Though these sister resorts are in Disney’s deluxe category, there are still plenty of freebies to be found for guests on the lookout:

Stormalong Bay (© Table for Five)Stormy Whether
Of course you’ve heard of Stormalong Bay … right? Disney’s most famous resort pool is shared by both the Yacht and Beach Clubs, and it lives up to the hype with a lazy river, a crazy waterslide and three-acres of sand-bottomed pool. It’s basically a mini water park, and it’s free for Yacht and Beach Club guests. (Please note though, if you are not staying at Yacht and Beach Club, you are not able to swim here….pool hopping is not allowed by the Walt Disney World resorts.)

Roasty Toasty
Recreate your youthful camping memories with a campfire and a movie on the Crescent Lake beach. Ask the front desk for the nightly film schedule, then head to the Beach Club Marketplace for some marshmallows!

Get Sporty
Let’s play some volleyball! Or, if you’re more refined, croquet! Guests can borrow the equipment for free from the Ship Shape Health Club.

Light Up the Night
Well, you’ll have to put on shoes, but if you walk over to the bridge to the Boardwalk, you can see the fireworks portion of IllumiNations without entering the Park! On a non-Park day, it’s a great, free perk that allows you to save your ticket for another day.

Beaches and Cream (© d.k.peterson)Jump and Jive
Grab and ice cream cone and enjoy some tunes at Beaches and Cream. The old-fashioned soda shop features a real, old time jukebox where guests can select their favorite song for free!

Board Walk
Head on over to the Boardwalk, a quick 10-minute walk around Crescent Lake, for an abundance of fun, free entertainment.

What’s your favorite thing to do at the Beach Club resort?

Re: Favorite thing to do at Yacht and Beach Club resort, although I never stayed here (the hotel rate is too high for my budget), I have visited the resort for a nice dinner at Yachtsmen Steakhouse and a visit to Boardwalk. Is it the same as Atlantic City in the 30s? I’m not sure; yes, it has the world-famous Boardwalk and some amusement stands, but it’s missing some venues. For example, there is no Steel Pier, there’s no Million Dollar Pier, there’s no Sky Ride, there’s no James’ Taffy, no Steel Fudge, and there’s no Diving Horse. Hey, Imagineers, please consider adding one or more of these Atlantic City features to your Boardwalk venue. The Sky Ride might be something to consider even if you have something similar, e.g, that parachute ride at Downtown Disney. If readers are wondering what the Sky Ride is, it’s a tall pole over 300 feet tall with an outer ring that revolves around the pole as it climbs up the pole, revolves a few times, and then declines down the pole. That said, the height of the pole might be too high for air traffic safety considerations, right, Nancy? Alternative venues could include the aforementioned James’ Taffy and Steel’s Fudge, but you might have to get permission from the original folks in A.C. to feature these establishments in Florida. Oh, well, it’s nice thinking about such features! 🙂
