Thrifty Thursday: Driving to Disney?

If you are driving to Disney, you simply must have a SunPass.  No, a SunPass doesn’t give you a free ride on Florida’s highway system, but it will save you time and money on Florida’s toll roads.

While living in Florida several years ago, I discovered how much time was saved by having a SunPass on my windshield because I did not have to stop at every toll booth and dig around for .75 to $1.25 in my console, not to mention the horn-blowing that occurs behind one’s car when I was really digging for toll fees.  SunPass holders also save money in toll fees.  SunPass toll rates (click link for cute little calculator to show your savings with SunPass) are lower than cash customers and the TOLL-BY-PLATE rates, not to mention Sun Pass customers are more relaxed than cash customers.

The SunPass is easy to obtain.  Over 2,000 retail locations, including Publix, CVS/pharmacy, and AAA Auto Club South, throughout Florida offer both the SunPass mini transponder and the portable transponder.   SunPass is also available online if you are planning ahead and have time to have it sent to you.

The SunPass Mini Transponder is a  permanent sticker that is applied to your windshield while the SunPass transponder is portable and can be moved from one vehicle to another easily.  They are also available at all Turnpike service plazas, Turnpike gas stations and SunPass Service Centers.  SunPass transponders can be reloaded either online or at many locations, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores and check-cashing stores, with no credit card required.  SunPass website has a dandy little tool to find retail locations to replenish your SunPass by just entering the Florida Zip Code near you.  You can also replenish your SunPass online as you are driving down the road towards Disney if you realize your account balance is low.  I’ve found the SunPass information line to be very helpful and there is now a downloadable SunPass User Manual available!
