Terrific Tuesdays: Staying Dry When it Rains

With the summer heat in Orlando often comes rain. Most people with summer plans to visit Walt Disney World don’t realize summer is actually the rainy season. With a few tips though, you can prevent the rain from dampening your magical vacation.

Most of the time it rains around the same time each day, about 3:00 p.m. Normally it comes on very suddenly and lasts about 15 minutes. Of course, you can never guarantee anything when it comes to the weather, but I try and plan my meal time as close to 3:00 as I can when making reservations. Occasionally I find myself out and about the parks when the rain hits. Each park has at least a few places that are my favorites to get out of the rain. I try to find shows or attractions that take about 20 minutes so it will be over when I exit the attraction.

In Magic Kingdom I try to be in Tomorrowland when it rains if possible. My favorite rainy time attractions in that area are Carousel of Progress and Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor. There is also The Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square, Mickey’s Philharmagic in Fantasyland and The Enchanted Tiki Room in Adventureland.

It’s Tough to be a Bug is a great place to hide out from the rain in Animal Kingdom. If you are looking for somewhere dry in DinoLand USA I prefer Finding Nemo-The Musical as well as Dinosaur. Flights of Wonder in Asia is a fantastic bird show that lasts about the same amount of time as the rain usually lasts. If you prefer to embrace the rain and wetness, it is a perfect time to head to Kali River Rapids. This is a wet raft ride that takes you thru the waters of the jungle.

Depending on show times, Hollywood Studios usually has quite a few options for rain cover. I take this time to enjoy The Great Movie Ride. There is also Muppet Vision 3D,  Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Disney Junior-Live on Stage!, and Star Wars Launch Bay. Beauty and the Beast-Live on Stage is mostly covered and a fantastic show to watch when it is raining.

Epcot can sometimes be tricky when it comes to staying out of the rain. If you find yourself in World Showcase you might prefer to explore more of the country you are visiting at the time: China, France and Canada all have movies that you can enjoy. In Future World, both Innoventions pavilions are great places to spend time in during the rain. And Ellen’s Energy Adventure is a 45 minute multimedia show as well as a dry place to be.

Of course, you can duck into a store and crowd around the doorway patiently waiting for the rain to pass. Or while there you can purchase an expensive poncho and try to brave the rain. But why not take advantage of that rain by doing some attractions instead? 🙂 I hope I have provided you with some options you didn’t think of to stay dry when the summer rain comes.
