Terrific Tuesdays: Discovering Epcot’s Norway

The Norway Pavilion in  Epcot’s World Showcase welcomes you into another world, the historical world of Vikings. This country is the newest addition to the World Showcase and opened in 1988 and is located between Mexico and China.  Within this pavilion, you will find a ride, a restaurant, beautiful gardens, architecture from a Scandinavian village and several shops.  There is also a replica of the Stave Church that holds a small museum sharing the history of famous Vikings. The ride located within Norway is called Maelstrom.  This is a boat water ride through the land of polar bears, trolls and Vikings.  At the end of your voyage, you’re invited to watch a short historical film on the beauty and heritage of Norway.

The main restaurant featured in Norway is located inside the Akershaus Royal Banquet Hall.  Here you are dining with royalty, as several Disney princesses make their way around to greet each guest in a storybook setting.  The restaurant offers a family style breakfast or hot entrees for lunch and dinner with a cold meat and salad appetizer buffet. Your meal at Akershaus also includes a photo package with a princess and takes one credit if you are on the meal plan.  The Kringla Bakari og Kafi is a smaller restaurant that serves soft pretzels and sandwiches.

Several shops are connected together  in the Scandinavian village.  The largest is called the Puffin’s Roost.  Here you can purchase familiar Viking relics like swords and hats.  They are also famous for perfumes and colognes, high quality sweaters and jackets.

On our first trip to Epcot, we were so worried about riding every ride and not stopping in the countries to see the “boring” parts , that we actually missed all that this beautiful Pavilion has to offer.  On our most recent trip we sat and listened to Julenissen tell the story of Norway’s Christmas celebration. Don’t deprive yourself of seeing the wonder in this beautiful country.

Shannan is a mom that was born and raised in rural Tennessee. She tells us: “I live with my husband and 3 of our 5 children. Travis is 24 and is father to my grandbabies, Emma and baby Judson. I can’t wait to start sharing Disney with them. Dusty is 22, Clay 12, Zachary 10 and Erin is 8. I clean houses to make money to fund my magical trips. I went to Disney the first time as a teen and couldn’t wait to start introducing my own children to the magic. We took our 3 youngest in 2004 and that started it all. We have been 3 times since then and have our first Christmas trip planned for this December. Usually my parents accompany us on the trip and I have to research and plan for things that will suit various ages in our party of 7. Each time I go, I try new experiences in lodging and dining so I can share it with friends and family that seek my advice on trip planning! Disney is definitely my first choice in vacation destinations. Hopefully there is a Disney surf and turf vacation in our future!“
