Disney with Little Ones: February is (Mostly) Fantastic

It’s often regarded as one of the best times of the year to visit due to low crowds and deep discounts. While it’s true that the gap between off season and peak season continues to grow less and less significant, you can bet on better conditions any time school is in session.

With the exception of President’s Day weekend, the month of February is a great time to visit Walt Disney World. The weather tends to be very mild and comfortable, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. The disadvantage to this is that (even though the pools are heated) it may be too cold for swimming for some guests, especially in the morning or evening hours.

Discounts have historically been available during this time to help fill resort hotels. With that being said, this is also a popular time for refurbishments both in the theme parks and at on-property hotels. Definitely take the time to check out the refurbishment schedule if this would be a deal-breaker for you and your family.

February is a great time to visit Walt Disney World, particularly for families with young children who are not yet in school. Even if your children are in school, check with the administration to learn about policies regarding missed days for family vacations and if work is able to be made up. Many schools excuse the absence in exchange for an educational report on the vacation. EPCOT is a great park to experience many different tastes and sights from around the world. Plan ahead with your child’s teacher or principal if you plan to go on vacation during the school year.

You’ll definitely enjoy shorter lines and easier movement through the parks during the month of February. With that advantage, keep in mind that the parks may have shorter operating hours due to smaller crowds and cooler weather. However, you’ll be able to see and do much more in fewer hours than you would during peak times. While the parks are less crowded, the hard-to-get dining reservations are still in high demand so you’ll want to plan ahead by making those reservations 180 days in advance if possible.

All in all, February has been one of my favorite months of the year to visit Walt Disney World. If only I could work up the nerve to take my kids out of school!

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
