Disney Vacation Planning: Hi Ho Hi Ho It’s Off To The Park We Go!

11222382_10101976653143324_8925704033166866635_oHaving worked in Magic Kingdom, specifically in Fantasyland, I think it’s fair to say I’ve seen a lot of guests both young and old, both experienced and first time visitors.  All of these guests have something in common though: they all wonder what are the best things to wear and pack for their visits to the park.

There is no right or wrong answer, as long as it’s tasteful and comfortable for you.  Keep in mind this is a family friendly park so appropriateness is a necessity.  You will want to be aware of the temperatures while you’re there as well as the weather in general.  Of course the weather is always changing but it’s a sure bet that there will be some afternoon showers and and guaranteed to be hot and humid in June through August.  The week before you are heading to Disney check the weather.  Believe it or not it does get cold in Disney in the winter….I’ve seen it snow!

If you’re comfortable walking miles and standing in flip-flops all day then wear them.   If not stick with a comfortable pair of sneakers, not brand new!  The last thing you want is a blister.  If you can wear shirts that are sweat wicking, like Under Armor makes that would be a good choice in the summer heat.  Any clothing that will not keep the heat in and get soaked is a good idea.  Whatever you choose to wear, make sure it is comfortable on you, because the worst thing is not feeling comfortable when you’re out in the parks all day.

As for what to pack, again it is what you’re comfortable with.  Many people aren’t comfortable carrying a backpack around with them all day.  If that’s the case just understand that it may be hot, or rain and if you’re not carrying it with you then you may have to buy items to solve whatever situation you’re in.  When asked what you should pack for a day in the parks I always suggest sunscreen, and in the Florida sun you’re going to want to keep reapplying.  Sunglasses are always another good thing to have on hand.

Water bottles that you had placed in the freezer over night are also a great idea.  Another great thing to pack is one of those washcloths from the room.  Place it in a zip lock bag with ice and you’ll appreciate that cool cloth in the summer heat.  It’s also great to place on the back of a child’s neck when they’re having a meltdown.  Quick snacks are also a good idea, along with puzzles or some activity book to keep everyone occupied while waiting on long lines.  If you have little ones who tend to fall asleep before you leave the park for the night a great idea is packing their pajamas and getting them into them when you sit down for dinner.   Take them to the rest room, wash them up (another use for that washcloth!) and get them in their pajamas.  That way when you get back to your room you just have to tuck them into bed.  A packed poncho never hurt anyone either!

Of course packing and clothing will vary with age and who you’re with, but there are always the few necessities.  Whether you’re young or old, a seasoned Disney veteran or a first time visitor, comfort is key.  You’re there to enjoy the happiest place on earth so don’t let a poor choice of dress or poor packing get in the way.  So have some faith, and trust in yourself and let Disney provide you with the pixie dust!

    Jess,
    Great ideas!
I remembered something when you mentioned sun-glasses. I always get some of those glasses holder to attach to the ear pieces. I know they look a little “nerdy” (for lack of another word), but they have saved me from having my glasses fall either off my head or needing to hold on to them. I usually find them at the $1 store, although sporting goods have the nicer-cooler ones.
