Disney Vacation Planning: Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is one of those surprise parks. While it doesn’t seem like a lot, the more you explore, the more you find and pretty soon you find yourself immersed in Hollywood’s golden era of the movies. Things are constantly changing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The most recent is the upcoming removal of Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat. I had grown to love that, but soon the Great Movie Ride Theater will be more noticeable as you enter the park.

Must Do’s – This will depend on ages involved, but following is a suggested list.

  • Fantasmic: This is one of my favorite shows. It is a combination of fireworks, movies, live characters and setting that comes alive. Package this with dinner at The Hollywood Brown Derby, Mama Melrose’s or a buffet at Hollywood & Vine.
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith: Be prepared to scream your way down Sunset Boulevard on your way to the Aerosmith concert, all the while listening to their best tunes blaring out the speakers in your “limo-ride”. There is a height requirement of 48”.
  • The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror: One of the other thrill rides in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has several drops, all of which are computer generated, so each ride is different. There is a 40” height limit and is quite dark.
  • Toy Story Midway Mania: This rides takes you into Toy Story while riding in a midway style 4D game. Loved by all ages! There are no height restrictions on this ride, but check before leaving regarding your Fast Pass. This ride stays very busy all day, so Fast Pass is a must.
  • Star Tours – The Adventure Continues: With the recent changes on this ride, each ride can be to a different universe. There is a height requirement of 40”.
  • Muppet Vision 3D: I know this one is dated, but it is my must-do every time. How can you resist Kermit, Miss Peggy and all the other lovable characters? There are no height restrictions for this show. Although the 3D affect can bother some young-ones, simply taking off the 3D glasses will help.

Meals

  • 50’s Prime Time Cafe: This table service transport you to a 50’s kitchen complete with Mom making sure you mind your manners and eat your vegetables.
  • Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant: Ever wondered what it was like to sit in your car and eat dinner, well now you can. All while watching some classic sci-fi movies.
  • The Hollywood Brown Derby: As I mentioned above, this can be packaged with Fantasmic for an even of fun or simply reserve a table and step back to the golden age of the movies.

One thing I haven’t mentioned is the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. If you are visiting in November and December, this walk-through of millions of lights on the Streets of America will definitely put you into the magical spirit of the holidays. Don’t forget to look for the purple cat hidden someplace among all the light displays.
