Cruising with Disney: What…and What Not to Pack

If you’ve never cruised before, you might find it tough to decide what to pack.  There are various ports where you will stop and possibly do an excursion, themed dinners on board the cruise ship, shows, nightclubs and more.  If there’s one thing I can tell you, it would be to pack lightly.

For the most part you live in your bathing suit while on board the Disney ships.  When heading to dinner, you’ll find casual dinners, Caribbean themed dinners, formal dinners and even adult only dinners.  For each of these you can mix and match your clothing.  Women can bring a nice dress for the more formal evening but capris, sundresses, and casual pants are all suitable for any other meal.

Men can bring a nice pair of khakis, a dressier pair of pants and a sport coat (if attending one of the adult only dinners).  And you can go right from your meal to the shows and night time entertainment so no need for additional clothing.  Because you do spend so much time in your bathing suit, bring a couple pair of shorts for days you get off the ship but there really is not a need to over-pack.  One suggestion I will make, bring a light rain jacket…just in case!

Everyone likes to buy a souvenir or two from their vacation.  While on the Disney ship you will find their shops have many different items to choose from in many different price ranges.  You can also bring home your Daily Navigator (the ships daily activity sheet you receive in your room each day), photos you take while cruising, along with other items you may collect on the ship and make a scrapbook once you’re home.  This will give you memories of a lifetime.  If you do choose to pick up a souvenir in one of the ports, the Cruise Director will be happy to give you a list of those shops that they have relationships with so that you know you are spending your money wisely.  The best souvenir may be the memories you take home.

Leaving room for your souvenirs though, is another important reason not to over-pack: you want to have room in your bags to bring everything home!

Sheila tells us: I live in Massachusetts with my husband and 2 daughters and was first introduced to Disney over 35 years ago. Having visited many times since, we always found ourselves eager to return because Disney always provided us so many options on things to do. One hot, humid, August day back in 1998, while visiting Animal Kingdom, a gentleman asked if we would like a ride in an air conditioned van along with an ice cold lemonade in exchange for an hour of his time. We took him up on his offer and when that hour was up we wanted to hear more…more about the Disney Vacation Club (DVC). We became DVC members that day and have never regretted our decision – we enjoy amazing vacations.
