Cruising with Disney: Sailing to Alaska

If you’d like a cruise that gives you a different experience than what some people consider the “traditional” cruise, consider Alaska.  Cruising Alaska certainly isn’t the warm, sunny, ocean breezes of the Caribbean, but it is an experience you will remember for a long time to come.

Starting with the basics, you’ll pack very differently for an Alaskan cruise.  Plan on bringing layers of clothing; long sleeves, sweaters, warm socks, gloves and jackets.  The weather can be very unpredictable but typically fairly cool during the day and downright cold at night once the sun goes down.

The sights are breathtaking.  Glaciers, wildlife, sea life, it’s like something you would see in a film.  The coloring on the glaciers is magnificent; from bright white to icy blue.  Chunks of ice will be floating in the water with seals lying on the ice as you float by them and you can witness just how beautiful they are.  The sight of a whale breaching is magnificent: what a beautiful mammal.  To actually see the size of a whale is stunning, they are so large yet they appear to swim so gracefully.  At one point, while walking down the streets of Ketchikan, you’d look up and there were bald eagles sitting atop the light posts.  Gorgeous creatures.

The landscape is magnificent.  You look down the streets of a town that might remind you of something from a TV show similar to Gunsmoke.  There was the local schoolhouse, a restaurant, post office, laundromat, grocery store and the local bar.  Houses lined the streets while others were built into the sides of a mountain.  The towns grow by hundreds during the tourist season; including people who move to the area for a seasonal residence to work as well as all the tourists that visit.  The residents are warm and friendly…their stories are something you’ll want to take time to enjoy.

Sheila tells us: I live in Massachusetts with my husband and 2 daughters and was first introduced to Disney over 35 years ago. Having visited many times since, we always found ourselves eager to return because Disney always provided us so many options on things to do. One hot, humid, August day back in 1998, while visiting Animal Kingdom, a gentleman asked if we would like a ride in an air conditioned van along with an ice cold lemonade in exchange for an hour of his time. We took him up on his offer and when that hour was up we wanted to hear more…more about the Disney Vacation Club (DVC). We became DVC members that day and have never regretted our decision – we enjoy amazing vacations.
